Our Story

Initially incorporated in 2004 to support the University of Rhode Island’s Master Gardener Program, which has since undergone major administrative changes, the trustees of the Foundation felt it best to broaden its purpose to provide support for non-profit horticultural programs of all types in the State of Rhode Island and surrounding communities.

Over the years, the Foundation’s 501-c-3 federal status has allowed its trustees to apply for and dispense grants for equipment and programs that assist organizations in their endeavor to promote horticultural education in various communities. The largest endeavor in the history of the foundation was to garner grants and public donations for a state-of-the-art greenhouse at the RI Veterans Home in Bristol so residents there can enjoy therapeutic activities in raising plants. Including pro bono services and volunteer labor, the facility is valued at more than $200,000.

More often, the Foundation is capable of dispensing modest amounts of financial support using annual proceeds from its endowment which is administered by the Rhode Island Foundation. Horticultural organizations and projects can apply for aid once a year by submitting a grant request to the Foundation within the grant application windows. Awards are evaluated and determined by a small group of trustees, most of whom have extensive horticultural knowledge and are passionate regarding the Foundation’s vision.
