“My interest in gardening began as a teenager when my grandmother, who lived in a triple decker apartment house, enlisted my help to plant a garden in the rocky soil next to the house in order to supplement a meager income. To this day, I remain an avid gardener and believe in the importance of educating and encouraging children and adults to grow. I value my role in the GFRI, as I too am a strong advocate for providing resources to those who are striving to implement practices to combat food insecurity in their community.“
Gail Woodward of Coventry, RI, is a retired programmer analyst who worked for the State of RI, Division of Taxation for 22 years. A graduate of the Community College of Rhode Island, she has an associate degree in business management. She served on the board of the Coventry Housing Associates, a non-profit whose mission is to acquire and provide housing to low-to-moderate income families in Coventry. Since 2005 she has been a URI Master Gardener and is now a member of the Hall of Fame, working in the program’s ornamental greenhouse on Saturday mornings. Gail is also a volunteer for Clothes to Kids, a non-profit organization that provides free clothing to low-income, school age children living in the Providence County area. She enjoys spending time with her grandson and two children and her favorite pastimes are gardening and genealogy research.
