Raised Bed Gardens

A GFRI mini grant provided funds to purchase construction materials to build new handicap accessible raised beds for Veterans at the new RI Veterans Home.  All previous beds, were leveled as part of the new home construction.  In a partnership with the URI Master Gardeners and GFRI funds, new raised beds were built outside the new units allowing Veterans using wheelchairs to work in the gardens growing flowers and vegetables safely and comfortably.  The raised beds are considered therapeutic to the veterans, as they afford them the opportunity to spend time outdoors gardening, which many of them enjoyed prior to living at the Veterans home. 

Now the veterans continue to enjoy growing plants and vegetables in the new raised beds allowing those in wheelchairs to garden comfortably and safely
